SOAR Facts
- · Only 11% of the homeless currently receive SSI/SSDI benefits
- · Nationally, only 37% of SSA disability applications are approved upon initial submission.
- · Although approvals increase to 53% after appeal, that process can take years.
What is Possible
Through SSI/SSDI outreach and assistance, initial approval rates can soar to 60-95% of applicants without appeals.
Promising Practices
The SOAR training was developed using Promising Practices for SSI Outreach based on interviews with 25 innovative programs around the nation that are working in different ways to expedite SSA disability benefits for people who are homeless.
